Douglas George Dodds was born on 4 February 1897, the son of John Adamson Dodds and his wife Annie Abbott Dodds. He was educated at the British School, Coggeshall and the Grammar School, Earls Colne.
In April 1913, when he was 16 years old, Dodds went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice in its Norwich branch. His manager there described him as 'painstaking and industrious. An excellent writer, quick and accurate.'
By the time his three-year apprenticeship was completed in April 1916, Dodds was already away on military service. He was killed in action in France on 3 May 1917, while serving as a Private with the Honourable Artillery Company. He was 20 years old.
