Douglas Knowles Day was born on 7 February 1894, the son of a postmaster. He was educated at Handsworth Grammar School in Birmingham and at Wakefield Grammar School. In October 1912, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Halifax branch.
Early in the First World War Day joined the army and was commissioned into the East Lancashire Regiment. Second Lieutenant Douglas Knowles Day died on 19 November 1915 of wounds sustained at Suvla Bay in the Dardanelles. He was 21 years old.
