David Robert Drummond was born on 30 October 1884, one of seven children of George James Drummond, a partner in Drummonds Bank, and his wife Elizabeth Cecile Sophia. He was educated at Harrow School, after which he joined the army, serving as an officer in the Scots Guards.
Drummond later left the army, becoming a partner in Drummonds Bank. He remained a member of the army reserve, and on the outbreak of the First World War rejoined the Scots Guards. Lieutenant David Robert Drummond was killed in action on the Western Front on 3 November 1914, a few days after his 30th birthday. He left a widow, Hilda Margaret, whom he had married seven years earlier, and three daughters, Joan Cecile, Violet Hilda and Winifred Pansy.
