Charles Victor Dowswell was born in High Wycombe on 16 April 1894, the son of Charles Wesley Dowswell, a dentist, and his wife Rosa Phoebe Ruth. In April 1912, shortly before his 18th birthday, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In September 1915 Dowswell left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Holloway branch to join the army. In September 1916 he was commissioned into the London Regiment. Second Lieutenant Charles Victor Dowswell was killed in action in France on 8 October 1916. He was 22 years old.

 

Charles Dowswell is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Camden Town branch.
