William Cecil Catherall was born on 6 June 1897, the son of Jonathan and Margaret Frazer Catherall. He was educated at King's School, Chester.
In April 1915, when Catherall was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Chester branch. He later left to join the army. By the time of his death in 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Northamptonshire Regiment, attached to the Norfolk Regiment. He died in Palestine on 2 November 1917. He was 20 years old.
