Thomas Leonard Cromwell was born in Grassendale, Lancashire in 1890, the son of Benjamin Cromwell, a gardener, and his wife Ann. From about 1906 he worked for Parr's Bank.

 

In September 1914 Cromwell left his job in the bank's Chester branch to join the army, serving initially as a Private in The King's (Liverpool Regiment). He was promoted to Lance Corporal in September 1915, and posted to France the following November. He was promoted to Corporal in August 1916.

 

Corporal Thomas Leonard Cromwell was killed in action on the Somme on 18 October 1916. He was 26 years old.

 

Thomas Cromwell is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Chester Eastgate Street branch.
