Stanley Campbell Cheverton (neé Smith) was born in South Africa on 22 March 1896, the second of four children of Captain Francis John Smith, an army officer, and his wife Clarissa Mary Campbell. In 1905 the family changed their surname to Cheverton, the maiden name of Stanley's paternal grandmother. In 1911 Stanley's father, having retired from the army, was ordained a clergyman in the Church of England, and later served as an army chaplain during the First World War.

Cheverton was educated at St Aidan's Vicarage Prep School, Gateshead Secondary School and Carlisle Grammar School. After leaving school he worked briefly for Yorkshire Insurance Company at Newcastle upon Tyne, before applying for an apprenticeship in National Provincial Bank of England. He started work at the bank's Newcastle branch in February 1913, when he was 16 years old.

After the outbreak of the First World War Cheverton joined the army. Following officer training at Sandhurst he was commissioned into the Border Regiment in May 1915. He was sent to Gallipoli in October 1915, and later to France.

Cheverton's older brother Frank was also in the army, and on the evening of 26 January 1917 the two brothers, both serving in France, had supper together. The next day, Lieutenant Stanley Campbell Cheverton was killed during an early morning raid. He was 20 years old.
