Raleigh George Aubrey Chapman was born on 27 January 1894, the son of Wellesley Pole Chapman and his wife Eleanor. In May 1910, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for The National Bank.
In 1915 Chapman left his job at the bank's London Islington branch to join the army. Lieutenant Chapman of the Royal Army Service Corps died in Rome on 1 March 1919, some months after the signing of the Armistice. He was 25 years old and left a widow, Helen, whom he had married in 1915.
Raleigh Chapman is commemorated on a bank war memorial at the Royal Bank of Scotland London Cavendish Square branch.
