Norman Roy Waugh Carruthers was born in Ashby-de-la-Zouch in 1898. In 1915, when he was 16 years old, Carruthers went to work for Bradford District Bank at its Bradford Commercial Bank branch. The following year he moved to head office foreign department.

Carruthers later joined the army, serving as a Private in the Coldstream Guards. He died in France on 27 August 1918. He was 20 years old.
