Montague Gerald Herbert Chapman was born on 18 December 1895, the only son of Frederick Herbert Chapman and his wife Mary. In November 1913, when he was 17 years old, Chapman went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In January 1915 Chapman left his job as a clerk at the bank's Hastings branch to join the army. By 1917 he was a Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade.
Lieutenant Chapman was shot and killed on 14 August 1917 when, in the aftermath of an attack undertaken by his battalion, he and his orderly went out under heavy machine gun and rifle fire in an attempt to ascertain the troops' position. He was 21 years old.
