John Cunliffe was born in Southampton in 1894. He was raised in Streatham, London, by his widowed mother Elizabeth and her father John Atherton. After leaving school he worked briefly as a clerk for a wine and spirit merchant, but in about 1911 took a job working for Parr's Bank. He also joined the bank's staff sports club.
In April 1917 Cunliffe left his job on the bank's general manager's staff to go on military service. Serjeant John Cunliffe of the London Regiment was killed in the Middle East on 27 December 1917, shortly after his 23rd birthday.
John Cunliffe is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
