James Yuille Caldwell was born in Annan in 1897. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Annan branch.
During the First World War Caldwell left the bank to join the army, serving as a Private in the Machine Gun Corps. He was wounded and taken prisoner while fighting in France, and died on 27 June 1918 in a German field hospital. He was 20 years old.
James Caldwell is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
