Henry Cecil Clarke was born on 16 June 1895, the son of Robert A Clarke and his wife Mary. He was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Kirkby Lonsdale, and was keen on sport, particularly football.

In August 1911, when he was 16 years old, Clarke went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at its Lytham branch. He transferred to Barrow branch in 1912 and Sedbergh branch in 1913, and in 1916 was promoted to a clerkship.

In April 1916 Clarke left the bank to go on military service in the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment). He was sent to France in July 1916. He was soon transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers and by January 1917 had been promoted to Lance Corporal. He died on 11 February 1917, following a night trench raid against the German forces south east of Armentières. He was 21 years old.
