George Henry Cockayne was born on 7 April 1893, the son of Samuel Cockayne and his wife Louisa. In December 1909, when he was 16 years old, Cockayne went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Liverpool branch. After the completion of his three-year apprenticeship he stayed on at Liverpool as a clerk. In December 1915 he was transferred to Blackburn branch.
During the First World War Cockayne joined the army, serving as a Private in The King's (Liverpool Regiment). He died in France on 16 August 1916. He was 23 years old.
