George Douglas Chalton was born in Darlington on 30 June 1889, the son of John Edward Chalton, a bank worker, and his wife Mary Elizabeth.

 

In November 1906, when Chalton was 17 years old, he went to work for his father's bank, National Provincial Bank of England, as apprentice at its Hull branch. He was transferred to Loftus branch in May 1911; Manchester Smithfield Market in July 1911; and back to Loftus in July 1914. He passed the final examination of the Institute of Bankers in 1912.

 

During the First World War Chalton served as a Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was taken prisoner in April 1918, and died in a German prisoner of war camp on 28 October 1918. He was 29 years old.
