Fred Callander was born in Forfar in about 1898, the son of David Callander, a farmer, and his wife Elsie. In March 1913 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as apprentice at its Forfar branch.
During the First World War Callander joined the army, serving as a Private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died in France on 17 April 1917 of wounds received in action. He was 19 years old.
Fred Callander is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
