Ernest Cotton was born in Bolton in 1898, the son of Joseph Cotton, a railway clerk, and his wife Martha. He worked for Williams Deacon's Bank at its Bolton branch.

 

During the First World War Cotton left the bank to go on military service, and by 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force, on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 25 July 1918. He was 20 years old.
