Eric Horace Comber-Taylor was born in Brighton on 8 June 1889, the only son of William Comber-Taylor, a livery stable keeper, and his wife Ida. In October 1907, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England at its Folkestone branch. He later transferred to Hythe branch.

In September 1914 Comber-Taylor volunteered for the army, serving initially as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was posted to the Western Front in November 1915, and in March 1916 returned to England to undertake officer training. He was commissioned in August 1916, and by the end of the year had transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (later the Royal Air Force), earning his aviator's certificate in December 1916. Captain Comber-Taylor was accidentally killed while flying in France on 16 June 1918. He was 29 years old.
