Edwin Chapman was born on 1 June 1893, the son of Henry and Annie Chapman.
Chapman had a relative who worked for National Provincial Bank of England, and in 1909 Chapman himself went to work for the bank as apprentice at its Stokesley branch. After the completion of his three-year apprenticeship, he spent time working as a clerk at Middlesbrough, Guisborough and Wetherby branches.
During the First World War Chapman joined the army, serving as a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. He died in Belgium on 5 August 1917. He was 24 years old.
