Cyril Raymond Joseph Campbell was born on 14 March 1890, the son of William Cadogan Campbell and his wife Anna. He was born in London, but the family later lived in Newport, Monmouthshire.

 

In 1907 Campbell obtained a post as an apprentice in National Provincial Bank of England, on the recommendation of the bank's Newport manager. By 1915 he was working in the bank's London office.

 

During the First World War Campbell joined the army, serving as a Private in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). He died in France on 3 May 1917. He was 27 years old.

 

Private Campbell is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
