Albert Frederick Cooper was born in Didsbury, Manchester on 1 August 1889, the son of Frederick Cooper, a cashier, and his wife Mary. He was educated at The Hulme Grammar School, Manchester.

In September 1906, when Cooper was 17 years old, he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at its Manchester Withy Grove branch. In 1910 he transferred to head office in Manchester, and in 1911 he was promoted to a clerkship there.

In May 1915 Cooper joined the army, initially in the Royal Fusiliers. He went to France in November 1915. On 28th April 1916 he was wounded while out with a small working party, about 2 miles behind the firing trenches. He received shrapnel wounds in the thighs and left arm and was transferred back to England, recovering at the Lord Derby Hospital, Winwick. He was subsequently commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Middlesex Regiment, and in January 1918 returned to the Western Front. He was wounded on 8 May 1918 and died at a casualty clearing station the next day. He was 28 years old.
