William Arthur Brand was born in Leicester in 1895, the son of James Dennis Brand, a clerk, and his wife Mary Jane. In December 1911 he went to work for Northamptonshire Union Bank.

During the First World War Brand left his job at the bank's Leicester branch to join the army, serving as a Rifleman in the King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was killed in action in France on 7 August 1916. He was 21 years old.
