William Benjamin Bolton was born in Edinburgh on 17 October 1886, the son of William Bolton, a customs and excise officer, and his wife Annie Margaret. When Bolton was about 11 years old the family moved to England.

 

After leaving school Bolton initially went to work as a boy clerk in the General Post Office, but in December 1906 joined London & Westminster Bank, working as a clerk at the bank's head office in London. In June 1916 he left the bank to go on military service.

 

Lance Corporal William Benjamin Bolton of the King's Royal Rifle Corps died of spotted fever in hospital in England on 7 February 1917. He was 30 years old and left a widow, Edith Annie, whom he had married in 1912.
