Thomas Hilditch Bickerton was born on 25 May 1891, the son of Thomas Howard Bickerton, a commercial traveller, and his wife Selina Mary. He joined Parr's bank in around 1911. When he left the bank to join the forces he was working as a clerk at its Manchester branch.

 

Bickerton joined the army in the first week of September 1914, serving initially as a Private, and later as a Lance Corporal, in the Manchester Regiment. He was killed in action on the first day of the Somme campaign, 1 July 1916. He was 25 years old.
