Theodore David Vodden Beck was born in Tiverton in 1894, the son of William and Alice Mary Beck. In about 1914 he started working for Parr's Bank.

In February 1915 Beck left his job in the bank's Taunton branch to join the army, serving initially as a Private in the Honourable Artillery Company. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Somerset Light Infantry in May 1916, and was killed in action on the Somme on 16 September 1916. He was 22 years old.
