Stephen Spencer Beall was born on 8 August 1893, the son of Jeremiah John Beall, a bank clerk, and his wife Maud Catherine. In August 1910, on his 17th birthday, Beall followed his father and elder brother John into banking by starting an apprenticeship with London County & Westminster Bank.
In July 1915 Beall left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Hanover Square branch to join the army. He was commissioned into The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), rising to the rank of Captain.
In March 1918 Beall's brother John was killed in action in France. Six months later, on 18 September 1918, Beall himself was killed, also in France. He was 25 years old.
Stephen Beall is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Regent Street branch.
