Stanley Ward Bowes was born in London in about 1891, the son of Ernest Ward Bowes, a building surveyor, and his wife Letitia Kate. He was educated at Emmanuel School, Wandsworth. In November 1909 he went to work for Coutts & Co.

During the First World War Bowes left his job as a ledger poster at the bank to serve in the army. He joined the University of London Officers Training Corps in November 1914, and was commissioned into the Dorsetshire Regiment in March 1915. He went to France two months later.

Second Lieutenant Stanley Ward Bowes of the Dorsetshire Regiment, attached to the Royal Fusiliers, was killed in action at Hohenzollern Redoubt, near Vermelles, on 29 September 1915. He was 25 years old. His company Serjeant Major later wrote: 'I was next to him when he fell. He was one of the bravest officers in my Company - he was commanding it at the time of his death.'

Stanley Bowes is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Coutts & Co, London 440 Strand.
