Samuel Lawrence Buxton was born on 20 September 1888, the son of a Leeds schoolmaster. In May 1905, when Buxton was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Leeds branch. In November 1910 he was transferred to West Hartlepool branch.
During the First World War Buxton joined the army, serving as a Private in the West Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. He was 27 years old.
