Rupert Hilton Black was born in Ashton-under-Lyne on 4 March 1898, the son of John William Black, a solicitor's clerk, and his wife Elizabeth. In June 1914, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co.
In November 1916 Black left his job at the bank's Manchester Smithfield branch to join the army, serving as a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 22 August 1917. He was 19 years old.
