Robert Nisbet Brown was born in 1895, the son of Robert and Janet Jane Brown. He began working for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Bo'ness branch in November 1909, when he was 14. He later transferred to Falkirk branch.
During the First World War Brown joined the army, serving as a Private in the Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in France on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. He was 21 years old.
Robert Brown is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
