Oswald Spice Barnes was born on 10 February 1894, the son of Thomas Barnes and his wife Elizabeth. In his youth he was a chorister at Westminster Abbey. In June 1912, when he was 18 years old, he started work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In the first months of the First World War Barnes left his job at the bank's London Chancery Lane & Holborn branch to join the army, serving as a Serjeant in the Royal Sussex Regiment. He died in France on 28 September 1915. He was 21 years old.
