Lionel Arthur Broadbridge was born in Leytonstone, London, on 26 February 1892, the son of Captain Anthony James William Broadbridge and his wife Jane. Captain Broadbridge was a former naval officer, later a GPO telegraphist. While Broadbridge was still a child the family moved to Dover, where Broadbridge attended Dover Grammar School for Boys. In May 1910, when he was 18 years old, Broadbridge went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In November 1915 Broadbridge left his job as a clerk at the bank's Reading branch to join the army, serving in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Serjeant Lionel Arthur Broadbridge died in France on 7 August 1918. He was 26 years old.
