Lindsay Blair Buchanan was born on 15 September 1878. He started work as a junior in Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co in October 1894, initially at head office in Manchester. He was promoted to clerk in 1899 and transferred to Oldham branch in 1905, returning to head office in 1915.

Buchanan left the bank to go on military service in April 1916, serving as a Private in The King's (Liverpool Regiment). He died in France on 26 September 1916. He was 38 years old.
