Leslie Gordon Black was born on 11 May 1884, the son of George Ralph Black and his wife Charlotte.

In December 1902, when he was 18 years old, Black left his job as a clerk at London granite merchants Van Praagh & Co and went to work for London & Westminster Bank. He initially joined the bank as a teller at London City branch, before being appointed teller at London Eastern branch in November 1903. In July 1909 he moved to London Marylebone branch, and the following month moved again, to head office. In August 1909 London & Westminster Bank merged with London & County Bank, and Black became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

Black was a keen sportsman, and was a member of the bank's staff sports club. He was also known among colleagues for his fine tenor voice.

Black was a member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, and in August 1914 was called away from his job at the bank to go on active service. Sub-Lieutenant Black died in England on 13 December 1916 of wounds received in action. He was 32 years old.
