John Alfred Butcher was born in Putney, London, on 16 November 1896, the son of William and Alice Maud Butcher. In April 1915, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In November 1915 Butcher left his job at the bank's Foreign branch, London to join the army, serving as a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 14 April 1917. He was 20 years old.
John Butcher is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
