John Victor Elphinstone Balbirnie was born in Sheffield on 30 May 1887, the son of Hugh de Vaux Balbirnie, a surgeon, and his wife Rosa Katherine. He was educated at Sheffield's Central Secondary School. After leaving school he went to work for Sheffield Banking Co and its Sheffield branch.
In February 1916 Balbirnie joined the army, serving in the Royal Fusiliers. He went to France in September 1916, and served there until summer 1917. After officer training in autumn 1917 he was commissioned in January 1918, and returned to France the following August.
Second Lieutenant John Victor Elphinstone Balbirnie was killed in action in France on 7 September 1918. He was 31 years old, and left a widow, Isabella. Their son John was born five months later.
