James Archer Balfour was born in Mount Florida, Glasgow in 1887, the son of James Michael Balfour, a house factor's cashier, and his wife Elizabeth Macquarie Balfour. In 1903 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland, and a decade later was appointed to the staff of the bank's London office.
During the First World War Balfour joined the army, serving as a Private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 13 November 1916. He was 29 years old.
James Balfour is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
