Humphrey Bracey

Humphrey Alfred Bracey was born in 1891, the son of Alfred and Bertha Bracey. From about 1911 he worked for Parr's Bank, and was also a member of the bank's staff sports club. He was one of the best shots in the club's rifle section.

On 8 August 1914 Bracey volunteered for the army, leaving his job at the bank's head office in Bartholomew Lane, London, to go on active service. Lance Corporal Humphrey Alfred Bracey of the London Regiment was killed in action in France on 25 May 1915. He was 23 years old.

An obituary in the bank's staff magazine later recalled, 'In the departments in which he was formerly employed, he was ever ready to assist his colleagues, and was a most generous and jovial companion. His absence will be especially noticed on such occasions as balance nights, settling days, etc, when the heavy work was much lightened by his ready wit and humour.'

Humphrey Bracey is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
