Hastings Duncan Barbour was born in 1899, the son of William Barbour, a draper, and his wife Annie. In January 1916, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Dumfries branch.
After turning 18 in 1917 Barbour joined the Royal Flying Corps, serving as a Second Lieutenant. He was killed in action in France on 21 October 1917. He was 18 years old.
Hastings Barbour is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
