Harold Brearley was born in Leeds in 1896, the son of George Brearley, a co-operative shop storekeeper, and his wife Annie Eliza. He worked for National Provincial Bank of England at its Leeds District Bank branch.
During the First World War Brearley joined the army, becoming a Private in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He died in Belgium on 17 January 1917. He was 21 years old.
