Frank Black was born in St Andrews in 1896, the son of Robert Black, a joiner, and his wife Helen. He started working for Commercial Bank of Scotland as apprentice at its St Andrews branch in March 1914.
During the First World War Black joined the army, serving as a Corporal in the Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action on the Somme on 27 March 1918. He was 21 years old.
Frank Black is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
