Ernest Anselm Bailey was born in Burton upon Trent in 1894, the son of Daniel Bailey, a colliery clerk, and his wife Annie. The family moved to Edinburgh when Bailey was a young child. In October 1912 Bailey started work as an apprentice in Commercial Bank of Scotland, and in June 1913 began work at the bank's Edinburgh Newington branch.

 

During the First World War Bailey joined the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He died at Gallipoli on 28 June 1915. He was 21 years old.

 

Ernest Bailey is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
