Edward Cecil Birch was born on 27 December 1896, the son of Lieutenant Colonel George Francis Birch and his wife Rose.
In August 1914, when he was 17 years old, Birch went to work for London County & Westminster Bank. In 1916 he left his job at the bank's London Wimbledon Common branch to join the army, and was commissioned into The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). He subsequently transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (later the Royal Air Force).
Lieutenant Edward Cecil Birch died at home on 26 January 1919, of an illness contracted while on active service. He was 22 years old.
