Clifford William Bales was born in Liverpool in August 1894, the son of William Ellis Bales, a commercial traveller, and his wife Alice Anne. He grew up in Ormskirk, where he was a patrol leader in the local Boy Scouts and a keen cricketer. In December 1910 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co.
In August 1914 Bales volunteered for the army, becoming a Private in the 18th (Liverpool 'Pals') Battalion of The King's (Liverpool Regiment). He went with his battalion to France in November 1915, and was killed in action on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He was 21 years old.
