Arthur Braithwaite was born in Whitby on 26 July 1893, the son of Arthur Braithwaite, an industrial chemist, and his wife Mary Ann.

In March 1910, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its West Hartlepool branch. In 1913, after the completion of his three-year apprenticeship, he became a clerk at Newcastle upon Tyne branch.

At the beginning of the First World War Braithwaite joined the army, becoming a Second Lieutenant in the Durham Light Infantry. By 1918 he had joined the Royal Flying Corps and was posted at Yatesbury Aerodrome. He was killed in an air crash during a training flight on 11 March 1918. He was 24 years old.
