Arthur Etheridge Begernie was born on 22 September 1896. In December 1914, when he was 18 years old, Begernie started working for London County & Westminster Bank.

In 1915 Begernie left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Lombard Street branch to join the army, serving as a Private in the London Regiment. He died in France on 19 September 1916, three days before his 20th birthday.

Arthur Begernie is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
