Archibald Gordon Browne was born on 24 July 1891, the son of Harry Tillman Browne, a bank clerk, and his wife Frances Phoebe. In February 1910, when Browne was 18, he followed his father into banking, taking a job with London County & Westminster Bank.
In November 1915 Browne left his job at the bank's London head office to join the army, serving as a Private in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). He was shot in the back in March 1917, but made a full recovery and was able to return to active duty. He died in Belgium on 12 October 1917. He was 26 years old.
