Alfred Joseph Brown was born on 12 September 1895, the son of Joseph Richard Walter Brown, a shipping clerk, and his wife Eliza. In October 1912, when he was 17 years old, Brown went to work for London County & Westminster Bank at its London Cornhill branch. He later transferred to the bank's London Foreign branch.

 

In 1915 Brown left his job at the bank to go on military service as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was wounded in 1916, but recovered sufficiently to return to active duty soon afterwards. He died in France on 15 April 1917. He was 21 years old.

 

Alfred Joseph Brown is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
