Alfred Hughes Brown was born on 31 July 1880, the son of Timothy John Brown and his wife Ellen.

 

In December 1898, when he was 18 years old, Brown left his post at the Ocean Accident & Guarantee Corporation in London and went to work for London & Westminster Bank. He initially held the post of teller at the bank's London City branch, before being appointed assistant county clearer (4th class) at head office in London in March 1903. In 1909 London & Westminster Bank merged with London & County Bank, and Brown became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank. He was appointed assistant country clearer (3rd class) in March 1912.

 

In July 1917 Brown left his post at the bank to join the army, serving as a Private in the London Regiment. He died at a casualty clearing station in France on 5 January 1918. He was 37 years old and left a widow, Jane.
