Robert Henry Chester Abercrombie was born on 3 June 1890, the son of Chester and Ada Maria Abercrombie.
In October 1908, when he was 18 years old, Abercrombie went to work for London & County Bank. The following year the bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Abercrombie became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
During the first months of the First World War Abercrombie left his post as a junior clerk at the bank's Hastings branch to join the army. By the time of his death in May 1915 he was serving as a Second Lieutenant in the Middlesex Regiment.
Abercrombie was killed in action near Ypres on 3 May 1915. He was 24 years old.
